As a proud Mbarbrum woman born and raised in Kulin lands on Naarm (Melbourne), Caroline Kell and her family has faced adversities such from poverty, to other issues like grief, loss, trauma and family violence during her younger years. But it was surviving these that made her realise her true passion: to help uplift Indigenous people through practices that improve social emotional well-being. Her amazing story of resilience and healing led her to complete a bachelor degree in Social Science and becoming a fully qualified Counsellor. And thus, Blak Wattle Coaching was born.

When we yarned about Blak Wattle Coaching’s current visual identity, we learned through Caroline that she wanted to revamp her brand. Caroline felt that her branding needed more direction as it didn’t quiet capture her brand messages or speak to her ideal customers – First Nations people and community. As Caroline learned more about the services that we offer, she decided on embracing our Goanna Branding Package. This meant delving in deeper with our Brand Discovery Workshop, logo package, some branded collateral and illustrations.

Gather & Create

As we created Blak Wattle Coaching’s branding assets, we kept in mind the important points Caroline shared through the Brand Discovery Workshop. The highlight of this branding project was the development of her logo, as she wanted a strong emblem to represent what Blak Wattle Coaching is all about. We conceptualised the elements to represent 3 layers of Cultural knowledge. Caroline is in the centre, while her parents and grandparents surround her through their teachings. The yarning circles are then adorned with our abstract visualisations of the wattle plant, a sacred and highly significant plant that Caroline and her family holds dear. We wanted the message to reach her target audience, which are First Nations’ women – hence this bold, powerful yet feminine font choice.
